Overview
Spirit Gem is arguably one of the most difficult, challenging, and complex areas of lore. It requires multiple attempts, it took me 24 attempts the first time, and I still learn new things every time I go through it. Or used to. Oh well.
Entry
The Old Castle
From the valley, you must climb up the cliffside to reach the Old Castle. This route is basic, the video below shows the correct path.
Navigating to the Old Castle
The Sewers
Once you go under the castle as shown in the video, you will enter the sewers. This area is a mix of tight corridors, tricky puzzles, and deadly frogs. yes. deadly frogs in minecraft.
There are many steps to getting through the sewers, so lets dive right in.
The first thing to know about sewers is that there a many different rooms, each of which is listed below:
- The Entrance
- Main Room
- Light Room
- Torch Room
- Exit Room
The main room is the most complicated, and there is a image below with the layout of the room.
The spot where the player is standing in the image above will serve as a reference point, referred to as “Point Blank” throughout the sewers section in this article.
The first step is opening the Light Room door. By default, the door is closed, but if a player has done it and died in the sewers, it may be open.
If you look at the image above, you will notice where it says "Light Room". If you can see into that room, the door is open, but if it is closed, AS IT IS IN THE IMAGE Then follow the gif below to see how to open it.
Light Room (Spirit Edition)
You will do light room in 2 parts. From Point Blank, you will need to parkour across the two hanging signs to your left, and go into light room. careful not to fall.
If at anytime you fall into the Main Room pool, watch for the frogs, they poison you and can and will kill you and end your run, even though it hasent really begun. To get out of the pool, swim up the water UNDER THE HANGING SIGNS and swim through to return close to Point Blank. THIS IS A SOFTLOCK IF YOU STOP SWIMMING IN THE TUNNEL, SO BE AWARE.
To execute Light Room part one perfectly, do EXACTLY as the video below shows, if you fall before you are supposed to, you will have to do it again. The video also shows the player returning to point blank.
Completing The Lights Stage One
Light Room (Spirit Edition) Phase 2
Once you return to Point Blank, you will notice the water is slightly higher. It is in stage two of three, and next you will have to get it up to stage three.
As per earlier, follow the video below EXACTLY to lift the water to stage three.
Completing The Lights Stage Two
Once you return to Point Blank, you will notice the water is at its highest level. Now you much get yourself the torch, Then go to the Exit Room. You must swim through the water tunnel, to a barrel with a button, in witch bressing a buton on it will give you a torch. Then you must find the exit of the Torch Room, and swim out back to Point Blank. Then you must swim through tunnels again, this time TAKING THE SAME TURNS AS IN THE VIDEO And then exiting the sewers. As usual, the video below shows exactly how to do it.
Make sure to OFFHAND THE TORCH
Escaping The Sewers
You can do all of this without ever returning to Point Blank, but for the sake of clarity, it is recommended to do so.
Run 1
"Once you press the button, you have successfully entered hell" -ItsOreo
Immediately after you press the button at the end of the video above, you will be transported to the snowy castle. This is officially in the spirit area, but not counted as run one. To navigate to run one, follow the video below. Be aware that once you step on the iron pressure plate (inicated in the video) you are on the clock. You have a limited ammount of time in the cold before your torch runs out and you freeze to death. There are "Revives" that reset the countdown for your torch.
Going To Run One
Once you step on the pressure plate, you will need to quickly make your way through the snowy castle, then out into the blizzard. Be careful not to get lost, as it is very easy for beginners to lose their way.
Watch out for the Worm! It will instantly kill you if it touches you, and spawns when you get darkness. NEVER stop running when you get darkness.
Now, follow this video to navigate Run One. I am doing this on a seprate world, so there wont be any worms spawning and it will be day time (I luv solas shader @ dawn).
Running Run One
Mine 1
Once you enter mine one, you will see the image below.
Now, you must navigate through the mine, get a key, and get out.
The gif below shows how to enter the main mine area.
As you see, I flick the lever on the right to lift the bridge. If it doesnt work for you, try flicking it again. Also click the revive to reset your torch.
The torch consumption rate is disabled in mines.
The image below is the layout of mine one.
Diagram Key
- Orange: The lava that the bridge crosses over
- Red: The key area (lower level) OR The exit (upper level)
- Green: Staircase/ladder to change levels
- White: A randomly generated mine segment
- Blue: The starting area
There are two levels to this mine, the upper level and the lower level. You enter on the upper level. Your goal is to reach the lower level and obtain the key, then go back up to the upper level and escape the mine.
Each white box represents a randomly generated mine segment. This means that the mine layout is different every time you enter, but the points of interest still have the same relative positioning.
You must cross the bridge, then make your way to a stairwell or a ladder to reach the lower level. Then navigate through the lower level the find the key area. the key area looks like this.
Once you have the key, go back the way you came (if possible) and return to the upper level. Then go to where the key would be, but on the upper level, to find the mines exit. It looks like this. Simply insert they key into the keyhole.
To view all of this in a video, refer to the one below.
Running Mine One
PLEASE NOTE THAT MY ROUTE WILL BE DIFFERENT THEN YOURS DUE TO THE RANDOMLY GENERATED SECTIONS.
Run 2
Immediately after you step into the teleporter in the room behind the door, you will be teleported to Run 2.
Now, follow this video to navigate Run Two. I am doing this on a seprate world, so there wont be any worms spawning and it will be day time (I luv solas shader @ dawn).
Running Run Two
Or you can take the alternate route shown in the video below.
Running Run Two (Alternate Route)
Mine Two
Once you go through the teleporter, you will be transported to mine two. This mine is about two times harder than mine one, so watch out.
Starting off, here is the layout of mine two
Diagram Key
- Yellow: A randomly generated mine segment (like mine 1)
- Blue: The mine entrance
- Green: The staircase and elevator
- Purple: The power switch
- Red: The mine exit
You must turn on the power, take the elevator to get the key, drop back down, and exit the mine.
Here is what the key area looks like.
here is what the power switch looks like.
Here is what the exit looks like.
Piston extended = on
Watch this video to see how to get the key.
Getting The Key
Watch this video to see me do the whole mine.

PLEASE NOTE THAT MY ROUTE WILL BE DIFFERENT THEN YOURS DUE TO THE RANDOMLY GENERATED SECTIONS.
Run Three
Immediately after you step into the teleporter in the room behind the door, you will be teleported to Run 3.
Now, follow this video to navigate Run Three. I am doing this on a seprate world, so there wont be any worms spawning and it will be day time (I luv solas shader @ dawn).
Running Run Three
Mine Three
Unlike mines one and two, mine three has a more complex layout, but it is not randomly generated, and a straight route.
Your objective is to get the unactivated spirit gem, then descend deeper into the mine to reach the end.
Also watch for spiders, they come in many various sizes and can be quite dangerous, dealing anywhere from half a heart to half your health in one hit.
Here is what the area to get the deactivated spirit gem looks like.
The mine is much too complicated to make a diagram of, having 5 floors and crazy winding paths. Follow the video below for each section of the mine, and the last video is all of them together.

Running Mine Three Section 3
Running Mine Three Altogether
Wait EXACTLY where the last video ends, as if you proceed further without reading the next section has proven to be fatal.
The Chase
The chase is the most simple part of spirit gem, yet the most dangerous.
You have to run through a cave tunnel while the Soul Worm chases you. There is also objects in your path, like walls, cobwebs, water, and more.
Here is a simple layout of the chase tunnel.
Diagram Key
- Black: Standard tunnel
- Blue: The tunnel entrance
- Green: The tunnel exit
- Yellow: A cobweb
- Purple: Where the spirit spawns
- Red: A door
- Brown: Parkour
To enter the chase, go slightly forward from there the last video ended, while holding the deactivated spirit gem, and the floor will fall out from under you.
At the end, there is a hole in the right wall, that is the exit.
Here is a video showing the chase in action:
The Chase
Once you go through the hole in the wall, you will find yourself in the exit room, with a portal in the floor. Jump in to receive the Spirit Gem and be transported back the the valley.
